Happy Mystery Monday! Can you guess what is pictured in photo #1?
The answer to last week’s mystery is the swamp rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos, pictured in photo #2.
The swamp rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos, previously known as Hibiscus palustris and commonly called rose mallow or hardy hibiscus, is one of our showiest native wetland plants. After producing enormous hollyhock-like blooms in shades of pink, white, red, or burgundy from midsummer into early fall, the plant forms papery, light brown seed capsules that dry and split open to release rounded, velvety brown seeds.
Native to wetlands and creek edges of the southeastern United States, swamp rose mallow thrives in partial sun and consistently moist soils rich in organic matter. It is a tall, shrub-like, herbaceous perennial in the mallow family, prized not only for its dramatic flowers but also for its wildlife value. The blooms attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and a host of pollinators, including specialist native bees such as the hibiscus bee, Ptilothrix bombiformis, which collects pollen almost exclusively from Hibiscus species.
As the season winds down, the dry, hairy seed pods persist on the stems. Gardeners can harvest the pods once they turn papery brown, dry them, and gently shake out the seeds for storage in a cool, dry place. Leaving some hollow stems standing through winter also benefits native bees that nest inside them. Highly valued in habitat restoration, swamp rose mallow offers beauty in bloom and quiet ecological purpose even after the petals have fallen.
