And the Emmy Goes to Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and ICC for “The Long Shore”

July 15, 2023 by Spy Desk Leave a Comment

The International Culture Collective (ICC) and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) are thrilled to announce the tremendous success of their inaugural joint project, the compelling documentary titled “The Long Shore.”

In recognition of its exceptional storytelling and production, this 21-minute film has been bestowed with the prestigious Emmy award from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS-NCCB).

“The Long Shore,” which aired during Maryland Public Television’s Chesapeake Bay Week in April 2022, takes viewers on a journey through the history of the Chesapeake Bay through the eyes of CBMM’s Curatorial team and the shipwrights of its working Shipyard.

Drawing on present-day scenes and historic footage and photos, this poignant documentary sheds light on the invaluable role played by CBMM in preserving this cherished heritage and the significance of this mission for the region and beyond.

Craig Fuller, Chairman of the ICC and Chairman of the CBMM Board of Governors, expressed his admiration for the documentary, stating, “It is so rewarding to see ‘The Long Shore’ receive an Emmy from NATAS-NCCB. This film, created by YO Productions in close collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, tells the story of one of the nation’s great treasures: the Chesapeake Bay. By better understanding our past, we can make more informed decisions about the future. ‘The Long Shore’ presents important messages for all of us in a beautifully crafted film.”

Kristen Greenaway, CBMM President and CEO, added, “What a tremendous achievement for everyone involved in bringing ‘The Long Shore’ to life. The film was conceived as a new avenue to share CBMM’s mission and why we do what we do. We’re grateful to YO Productions and International Culture Collective for their support and care in sharing our story. And we’re delighted that it’s been enjoyed by so many people and now recognized by NATAS-NCCB with a Capital Emmy award.”

Franmarie Kennedy, President of the ICC and Executive in charge of Production for “The Long Shore,” added her sentiments, saying, “This prestigious recognition signifies a milestone achievement for the International Culture Collective. We are truly honored to receive this Emmy award, which reflects our commitment to presenting historical content in innovative, artistic, and unique ways, ensuring that history comes alive for the next generation. Working on ‘The Long Shore’ has been an incredible experience, and I want to express my gratitude to the exceptionally talented YO Productions team, including Trey Terpeluk as the Executive Producer, Max Loeb as the Producer, Tyler Ford as the Director, and Drake Pierre as the Assistant Producer.”

“We’re all incredibly proud to see ‘The Long Shore’ recognized with a Capital Emmy award,” CBMM Chief Historian Pete Lesher said. “This film’s success is a testament to the collaboration that went into crafting a snapshot of life on the Bay over time, and more than anything, we are thrilled to be able to share these stories, and why they’re so vital to our mission, with a growing audience.”

In addition to the Emmy award, “The Long Shore” has also been celebrated as the Best Documentary Short at the Maryland Film Festival 2022, the Chesapeake Film Festival 2022, and the Ocean City Film Festival 2021. It also was named a Best Documentary finalist at California’s Venice Shorts film festival in 2022, a further showcase of the documentary’s excellence and widespread appeal.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet Takes Five for Chestertown Jazz Festival in September

July 5, 2023 by Spy Desk Leave a Comment

‘Take Five.’ It could mean a five-minute break from a busy schedule, but often we think of the musical wonder that is the ‘Dave Brubeck’s Quartet’ famous jazz standard. This outstanding, ever popular tune was composed by Paul Desmond in 1958 and released in 1959. It is considered to be the biggest selling, jazz single in the history of jazz. Most fans can hum a few bars, at least. But now, OMG Dave Brubeck’s sons are coming to town. Now you can enjoy the tune again, this time played at the 27th Annual Chestertown Jazz Festival by ‘The Brubeck Brothers Quartet’ who will headline the upcoming event on September 9, 2023.

Although the Quartet’s style is rooted in ‘Straight Ahead’ jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music. The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz.

Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making more music together practically all of their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1996, nearly a half century ago. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups as well as with their father jazz giant Dave Brubeck. and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. With Dan and Chris as the foundation, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet. They perform at concert series, colleges and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl, Monterey and now The Chestertown Jazz Festivals. The Quartet’s last CD, “Life Times” was a hit on the Jazzweek radio chart where it made the Top Ten list as one of the most played jazz recordings of the year.

As tradition has it, the festival will open with Gospel. This year we are featuring an all male group, ‘The Gospel Shepherds. Having performed over the
past several years for countless appearances in churches, celebrations and festivals. The current composition is Chris Cooper, guitar and vocals, Delbert Hicks, bass guitar, Gregory, ‘Worm’ Houston, vocals, Jerome, ‘Jr.,’ McKinney Jr, drums & keyboards, Harold, ‘Buddy’ Jones vocals and Chris Frazier lead vocals. Gone but fondly remembered is Clarence, ‘Doc’ Beck, 1958-2019.

The Erik Byrd Trio from the Washington area is a Grammy Nominee and will then take to the stage. If you like spiritual and good jazz, the mixture of both is
phenomenal and worth checking out and enjoying. Pianist Erik Byrd brings his trio of Bhagwan Khalsa and Tim Wharfield for Sunday morning stomping versions of traditional hymns and spirituals. Our songstress of the festival is also local, from the Silver Spring area. Cecily Bumbray will delight you with her sweet soprano jazz voice. She will sing with her quartet. Cecily has opened for soul artist Gregory Porter and R&B stars Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore and Elle Verner.

Our kick-off this year will again be produced by Matt Mielnick from ‘The Mainstay. They are offering a Jazz cruise on Thursday evening launching from the head of High Street. The performer is Ronnie Leigh a Jazz Vocalist from Syracuse, New York. He’s performed with Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin. He’s also one of the finest stylists working in Soul and R &B as well. There will be a limit of 50 attendees. Call The Mainstay for more information, 410 639-9133.

The Garfield will not have a concert on Friday night. However there will be an inaugural Latin Music Concert celebrating ‘Hispanic Heritage Month.’ This will be sponsored by Kent Cultural Alliance and the Ken County Local Management Board.

Main Street Maryland Program Celebrates 25th Anniversary

July 1, 2023 by Spy Desk Leave a Comment

Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and its Main Street Maryland partners launched a campaign this week to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Main Street Maryland program. Created in 1998 and managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the Main Street Maryland program builds partnerships with local governments, nonprofit organizations, and businesses to strengthen the economic development potential in Maryland’s historic downtown districts and neighborhoods. Through the program, 33 communities have been designated as Main Streets.

“As the former mayor of a designated Main Street Maryland community, I have seen firsthand the positive economic growth fostered by the program in Salisbury and the partnerships and opportunities it created to spur additional redevelopment investment,” said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day. “The program has had a similar impact in diverse communities in all corners of Maryland over the last 25 years, improving the quality of life for residents while supporting locally owned businesses, events, and activities that provide visitors with an authentic Maryland experience.”

The department hosted a luncheon for Main Street Managers at the Dough Roller restaurant in Ocean City, a designated Main Street Maryland community, while many Main Street Managers and other local officials were attending the Maryland Municipal League 2023 Summer Conference. To mark the milestone, a commemorative 25th anniversary logo for the program was revealed, and a new social media campaign was also launched to promote Main Street tourism, featuring the hashtag #CelebrateMainStreetMD. The commemorative logo and hashtag were displayed at the department’s exhibition booth at the conference. The department encourages Marylanders to visit the state’s Main Street communities and enjoy their unique charm, local shops and events throughout the summer and use the hashtag to post about it on social media. Promotional items celebrating the anniversary at events and festivals will be shared throughout the year.

As the state coordinating program of the National Main Street Center, Main Street Maryland is part of a national network of state programs across the country and is authorized to bestow official, nationally recognized Main Street designations for communities in Maryland. To date, neighborhood revitalization and redevelopment activities in designated Main Street Maryland communities have supported approximately 3,800 new and expanding businesses; created more than 14,000 jobs; leveraged nearly $490 million in private investment for more than 5,600 projects, as well as $477 million in public investment for 1,750 projects; and leveraged almost 900,000 hours of volunteer work with a wage value of almost $27.5 million.

Arc Central Chesapeake Region Breaks Ground on Port Street Project

June 6, 2023 by Spy Desk Leave a Comment

The Arc Central Chesapeake Region (The Arc) went public with their Expanding What’s Possible capital campaign at today’s Groundbreaking Ceremony for Port Street Commons.

Projected to open in the fall of 2024, Port Street Commons will be a first-of-its-kind community space in the redeveloped Port Street district in the heart of Easton. This innovative building will house both The Arc at Port Street, the new, permanent Eastern Shore Headquarters for The Arc, as well as The Residences at Port Street, developed in partnership with Chesapeake Neighbors, to include an attached wing with nine affordable apartments.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony took place at the future site of Port Street Commons and was attended by over 100 supporters, donors, and community leaders eager to celebrate this historic milestone for The Arc and for the town of Easton.

“What makes Port Street Commons a visionary sign of progress for our community is that it’s not just a Community Hub or Behavioral Health Suite. It’s not just affordable housing units. It’s all these things and more. Port Street Commons expands what’s possible,” said Jonathon Rondeau, President & CEO of The Arc, at the event.

All speakers at the day’s events highlighted the many ways the construction of Port Street Commons supports many of Easton’s and the mid-shore’s top priorities, including creating jobs, providing more opportunities for person-centered services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and increasing access to affordable housing options.

Other speakers at the event included Megan Cook, Easton’s Mayor; Carol Beatty, Maryland Department of Disabilities Secretary; Jake Day, Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary; Brooke Lierman, State Comptroller; and Dawn Moore, First Lady of Maryland.

“It has been exciting to celebrate today with the many community supporters, donors, and public champions of this project,” said Gregory Snyder, Chief of Staff.

This 24,000-square-foot new construction will cost The Arc almost $8.5 million to build, much of it done by Maryland- and Eastern Shore-based local contractors and businesses. The Arc’s capital campaign for Port Street Commons called Expanding What’s Possible began in December 2021 and has already raised over $4.7 million from federal and state partners, local community groups, and individual donors.

“A project like this is not possible without financial support, and we are grateful for everyone who continues to invest in The Arc’s mission and vision through this campaign,” said Gregory.

Port Street Commons is projected to open in Fall 2024. For more information about the future of The Arc and The Residences at Port Street, please visit us online: https://www.thearcccr.org/portstreetcommons/
