Publisher Notes: The Centreville Spy and New Contributors

July 19, 2023 by The Spy

There are a lot of good reasons why the Spy Newspapers will be launching a Centreville Spy this summer but perhaps the most important of which is that the Spy has always had a soft spot for Centreville.

While it may now be the essential highway midpoint for the entire Mid-Shore, this community has stayed in my memory as a place where some of the region’s most talented figures in public affairs, the arts, and regional history have all called home.

It is the home of two of the region’s most innovative private schools, one of the best-ranked public high schools on the Eastern Shore, and the main campus of the highly-valued Chesapeake College.

It is also the base of such outstanding artists as photographer Anne Nielson, environmental artists Howard and Mary McCoy, award-winning novelist Christopher Tilghman, landscape painter Nancy Hammond, furniture craftsman Ridgely Kelly, historian and former athlete Mary Margaret Revell Goodwin, and undoubtedly the most beautiful county courthouse on the Eastern Shore.

The addition of Centreville will also give this educated-driven news portal a presence in one of the Eastern Shore’s fastest-growing counties. Over the next few decades, Queen Anne’s County will be the first on the Delmarva to face unprecedented challenges from a Bay Bridge expansion that will eventually impact the entire Mid-Shore. QAC is also on the frontline on such critical issues as ecological resilience and rising sea levels. We also see significant challenges and opportunities for Centreville as it grows and develops.

Given the essential environmental role that Queen Anne’s County will play in this century, the Centreville Spy will dedicated to the late great conservationist Howard Wood. The product of Harvard College and its distinguished law school, Howard made the remarkable decision to return to Centreville to practice law in the early 1940s rather than a lucrative career as a Wall Street attorney. And while his law practice found success, it was Wood’s early role in Queen Anne’s County conservation protection as one of the founders of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, the Chester River Association (now ShoreRivers), and Queen Anne’s Conservation Association that surely gave him the most satisfaction. We recently asked Spy contributor Maria Wood to profile her grandfather for the Centreville Spy’s first edition here.

To help with the launching of the Centreville Spy, I am so pleased to say that the popular Queen Anne’s County author and historian Brent Lewis will be joining our distinguished list of contributors. Brent has three nonfiction books, including his most recent Stardust by the Bushel: Hollywood on the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore. His first novel, Bloody Point 1976, won an Honorable Mention Award at the 2015 Hollywood Book Festival.

The Spy has started a modest fundraising campaign of $20,000 to cover the initial costs of startup and support the Centreville Spy in its first year of operation. I am very grateful to the Arthur H. Kudner, Jr. Fund for its leadership commitment to this goal, which will match personal donations made to the Mid-Shore Community Foundation’s Centreville Spy Fund. I do hope that those Spy readers who live or work in the greater Centreville community will participate in getting the new Spy up and going. Donations can be made here.

Speaking of writers, I’m pleased to welcome David Reel as a weekly commentator for the Spy. With a lifetime of political activism (he recently was the chair of the Republican Central Committee of Talbot County) and a successful public relations career, David’s right-of-center political point of view matches well with the Eastern Shore’s consistently long history of conservatism. Whether one agrees or disagrees with David’s opinions, I think our readers will grow to look forward to and respect his thoughtful commentaries.

Once again, speaking on behalf of our Spy writers and editors, a heartfelt thanks for our reader support and Spies like you.

Dave Wheelan
Publisher and Executive Editor

19 Years and Counting: Plein Air Easton with the Avalon’s Al Bond and Jess Bellis

July 12, 2023 by The Spy Leave a Comment

A few years ago, the fact that the Avalon Foundation’s Plein Air Easton had climbed to be one of the most important outdoor art gatherings in the United States would have been met with lukewarm enthusiasm. While many would immediately applaud any top ranking that comes Easton’s way, the fact was that the general public didn’t have a clue what a “plein air” festival was.

To say that all of this has changed would be a understatement.

Over the last decade, plein air festivals have popped up nationwide. From San Francisco to New Bern, North Carolina, communities are now embracing the outdoor painting experience in record numbers, intentionally recalling the magic of European artists drawn to the challenge and gifts that come with painting outdoors, including the likes of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, and Renoir.

And unlike the early days, when events only attracted the artists themselves (and a few savvy collectors), the plein art movement is now attracting sizable audiences who enjoy the public events and educational programs built around the art itself.

The fact that Plein Air Easton is the most popular in the country is no surprise to the Avalon Foundation’s CEO Al Bond and chief operating officer Jess Bellis. For 19 years, the foundation has slowly reinvented what a plein air competition means for a community.

All of these invocations will be on display as the Avalon staff and over 250 volunteers welcome more than 60 artists from all parts of the globe and their building fan base with an opening reception at the Trippe Gallery in Easton this Friday night, followed by ten days of workshops, music, food, and art shows in almost every part of Talbot County.

The Spy asked Al and Jess to come by the Spy studio for a short chat about Plein Air Easton 2023 and some highlights planned.

This video is approximately three minutes in length. For more information about Plein Air Easton please go here.

Spy Minute: Oh Happy Day with AAM’s Juneteenth and Delmarva Pride in Celebration

June 18, 2023 by The Spy Leave a Comment

What better way to celebrate Juneteenth and Delmarva Pride in Easton than to capture the Maryland Spirituals Initiative Gospel concert under the masterful leadership of choral director Leroy Potter at the Avalon last night? The Spy caught this remarkable performance at the Avalon last night and documented the early set up of dozens of booths for Pride Day and the always popular Academy Art Museum day of festivities.

This video is approximately one minute in length.

Poplar Hill Developer Requests More Time to Evaluate Community Input

June 16, 2023 by The Spy Leave a Comment

The Town of Easton Planning Commission convened on Wednesday afternoon to discuss ongoing development projects and address concerns raised by community members. And the first part of the meeting focused on the Poplar Hill Farm development application. The Poplar Hill development has been a subject of considerable public debate and scrutiny among various stakeholders recently.

Ryan Showalter, representing the Poplar Hill developer’s LLC, appeared before the commission to request a continuance to allow his client further evaluation and incorporate feedback received from the planning commission, the parks board, and the general public over the last few month.

During the meeting, commission members expressed the importance of addressing key issues raised by the community, such as water quality, critical area regulations, and the potential impact on the Tred Avon watershed.

In response, Showalter clarified that the regulations did not necessarily preclude all development in an impaired watershed. He emphasized the need to carefully evaluate the project’s potential impact and make modifications to address public concerns and suggestions effectively.

The commission acknowledged the importance of considering recommendations from respected environmental groups, such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, regarding development in the area. The need for coordination between the state’s regulations, the critical area commission, and local environmental groups was also emphasized.

Discussion also turned to the concept of an adequate public facilities ordinance (APFO). Commissioners discussed the possibility of adopting an APFO to ensure that development projects meet specific criteria related to traffic, school capacity, water, and sewer infrastructure. While the town currently operates under similar policies, the adoption of an APFO would provide a formal framework for assessing development projects and their impact on public facilities.

Ultimately, the commission approved a continuance for the Poplar Hill Farm application. The next planning commission meeting in August will  provide time to revisit those revised plans and potential modifications.

Editor Note: Spy Artificial Intelligence Special Report

June 5, 2023 by The Spy

While it was it was a sheer conscience that the Spy’s columnists Al Sikes (former FCC Chair under George H.W. Bush) and Hugh Panero (former CEO and founder of XM radio) would submit for publication their thoughts on the impact of artificial intelligence on the same Monday that we were planning to run Jim Dissette’s interview with Washington College Writing Center director Sean Meehan.

Nonetheless, this kind of serendipity could only have happened at a time when the country and, indeed, the world are starting to come to terms with the serious technologicsal transformation AI will bring to society and its institutions.

One example is the Spy itself where the use of AI has already made its way into the daily life of editors and writers. From simple research tasks and word grammar tools,  to now using AI’s power to consume pages of government meeting transcripts into digestible, unbiased summaries can only lead to a more informed public.

The Spy will leave it to such powerhouse columnists of Al and Hugh and local education leaders like Sean to help our readers absorb AI’s full potential and risk for our culture and our future.

We encourage and welcome Spy readers to share their thoughts on all three of these commentaries here.

Spy Tip: Lydia Woolever on the Chesapeake Bay

May 20, 2023 by The Spy Leave a Comment

One of Spy’s favorites Maryland writers (and Mid-Shore native) Lydia Woolever takes on the importance of the Chesapeake Bay in the current issue of Baltimore Magazine. In Lydia’s essay, she makes a compelling case that the Bay is not only critical to the state’s identity but extends beyond Maryland’s borders, impacting the surrounding states and the entire region.
